About Us

who we are

Oak Matters specialises in Green Oak Timber Framing and Bespoke Carpentry.  We pride ourselves on sharing enthusiasm for traditional woodworking techniques and practices with our clients and enjoy in working in unison to create great timber-framed spaces and unique and functional wooden pieces.

Our Environmental Policy

Oak Matters is committed to using locally and responsibly sourced timber for use in our work. We use environmentally friendly and natural wood finishes on all of our products. Occasionally, when local sawmills cannot provide us with the correct timber, we source excellent quality European Oak from well managed and sustainable sources.  For every timber framed building we construct, we donate a portion of the cost of the build to ‘Trees for Life’ – Scotland’s leading tree conservation charity.

Steven Hanton

Steven originally studied Outdoor Education at Edinburgh University before embarking on a journey into woodwork.   A self-taught wooden boat builder, Steven launched 'Canvas Canoes' in 2010, which continues to turn out beautiful wooden boats.  He continued to expand his woodworking expertise, studying green oak timber framing and furniture making, and is now an experienced carpenter with a passion for all aspects of traditional woodwork. He relishes the opportunity to create unique and functional designs in wood.
